Hello everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for the comments on the blogs. I am finished and I hope that everyone enjoyed the course as much as I did.

It was funny by the end of visiting the museums, I could identify the artist by the painting style. I never thought that I would enjoy going to the museums, but I did. Now, when the weather gets colder, going to a museum will be on my to do list.

This was my last class to fill the requirements for the Bachelor Degree Program. If this was your last class, congratulations. If you still have more classes left, I wish you the best of luck and the hard work is worth it.

Hey all,
here are some pictures from New Britain Museum. It was nice to see the illustrations from books to be part of the museum.

This picture stood out quite a bit. The artist used marble dust to make is rocks stand out. That was a different technique I was not expecting. But look at how alive it is. One word awesome.

We all went to the Old Lyme Florence Griswold Museum and the New Britain museum. Here are a few shots of Old Lyme. Will post New Britain later. Could not take pictures of the paintings at Old Lyme. But it was an experience on how some artist worked and lived. The artist were boarders at the house, it was their country retreat. See my blog for some more info.

I went to visit the Museum yesterday,I really had a good time.The displays were wonderful and very different.I seen several of the displays on the blog, some I didn't understand so I looked for those particular displays.I was able to get a different aspect of the art and had a conversation with the guide that was there.In this conversation she was able to see some things that I pointed out that she didn't notice before.This display is a conversational piece because each time you will see something different or make a discovery of something.All the museums that I visited they all were different,they may had a continous theme in their own concept representing art.

I visited the museum today,after some time getting lost but I finally arrived.The museum was okay I expected to see more.The area I did like was the women clothing of time,I was not able to take pictures. I did take some pictures,I felt this museum was limited of displays.This was a smaller museum from the others I have visited so far.

Hi to all.I made it to the museum today as I scheduled it. I found this to be a very interesting museum,the art I was able to see was very good.I had the opportunity to visit for at least an hour,another co-worker had to go to Hartford and wanted to visit the museum as well.There were several areas we could not enter because of renovations being done on several floors.Several pictures I took the flash kept interferring,you will see this in the pictures,I did ask the guard to take it off but for some reason especially the one I liked so much the flash went off.My grand-daughter became tired after a while.My grand-daughter pointed out a piece of art that I didn't even notice or give a second thought too,I walked passed this painting several times not even looking in its direction.But she kept on a insisting for me to come over and see it,that I became very annoyed at her at that point and walked over to the exhibit, and I can tell you that I am thankful that she kept on bothering me about it.It was a work within itself I really can't explain it that I became very emotional about the painting,that's how realistic it was .I actually found myself crying in front of this painting.Pictures will follow soon,I have to get someone to download them for me,I am not that advance as yet,my advisor did the first set for me but he will be out of town for a week,if anyone would like to meet me at Albertus before next Wednesday to help me download these set of pictures I would appreciate it,drop me a line.I will be visiting my last two museums tomorrow which will be Friday June 9,2010.

Hi everyone,I have gotten so caught up with getting to the Met,I forgot about the other museums I need to visit.I plan on getting to them between tomorrow and this weekend.I know it's a crunch but I will make it work.I just want to say all the pictures I have seen from this class has been an experience and I think that is what we were to be able to come out with a different look at the art society.Through the different art selections that were shared I feel this was a success and we each appreciate art at it's best and divine aspect.

The details of our trip.
Why is there no engraving or real sign for the MET, with its name. I only saw the name on the Picasso banner? My wife and daughter were more interested in the jewelry. Seen above in one picture. I did get to the pyramid and mummies, yea me. Will have my paper posted soon on my blog, not about mummies. We had a great time and I can see we all, class and family, had a different museum experience to talk about.

My wife and I visited the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum on the 4th of July. This museum is located in Ridgefield, Connecticut. This museum is independent and non-collecting contemporary art museum. So every time you visit this place you will see different exhibitions of new artists or mid-career artists. This is a small size museum but you will learn a lot about contemporary arts.

While at the met,I was able to visit the Egyptian wing,we found it by accident looking for the ladies room.What an awesome display,I have a beautiful picture to share.The atmosphere made you feel as if you were actually there in that time period.It reminded me of the movie Cleopatra(the roman era).These displays I found is outstanding,the layouts of the room itself is interesting, we were wondering how do they know where to put what pieces and why to group particular artifacts together or apart.

I am still in awe at my visit to The Met,I have shared it with everyone I know.I plan on going back to visit,My co-worker,Mrs.Lowe enjoyed herself so much that when I shared the information about the other museums she was all ears and agreed with me to re-visit and find these museums as well.The other museums you shared Professor Nevins seem interesting also.Do I stay on the same Street as the Met and just walk either direction to these museums?Still waiting to post my pictures which will be soon.

Hi everyone, I made it to New York yesterday which was Tuesday June 29.I had beautiful weather,a little hot the temperature was 90.I had a wonderful time from the time I started all the way to the end.I have visited New York several times but always in a car.To take the train was wonderful,I haven't been on a train since I was eleven years old for a summer vacation.I learned so much from this visit,and the museum itself was outstanding, just the size alone was amazing you can see this museum at any angle you stand,even as you are walking towards the museum, coming down the side street .Now I understand the reason for it being knowned as the "mile museum".My pictures will follow soon.

I am still working on posting my pictures from my two visits at Yale art gallery and theYale British museum.Also my visit to the Met in New York,I had a wonderful time just looking at the outside of this building was fantastic. I have to wait for a friend to do it,again my computer is the older model and can't be loaded down from it. I am revisiting Yale art museum to implore about the painting I seen before and was able to see this time as well to share with them my early findings about the painting,but now I don't see the particular piece in the painting.My co-worker Mrs. Lowe also expressed the same similarties of this painting and wishes to see it for herself.Looking at the pictures from the Hartford Museum looks very interesting I can't wait to visit there , I will probably try to visit this weekend.

Yale University Art Gallery - June 27, 2010

Hello Everyone,

Yale University Art Gallery had two exhibits. The first one was Italian Paintings from the Richard L. Feigen Collection. This runs from May 28 - September 12, 2010. These paintings were very old and it was the first time I saw of oil on panel.

The second exhibit was Jane Davis Doggett: Talking Graphics. This exhibit runs from May 28 - July 11, 2010.

Items of interest to see are European and American Art from 1200 to the present, African Art, Asian Art and Ancient Art. each art work was great reading to learn about the culture and what the meaning was for the art work.

The only draw back from this museum was areas were closed do to renovation. One thing that I noticed was that I can recognize the artist by the paintings.

Yale Center for British Art - Sunday June 27

Hello Everyone,

Pictures will follow, This was one of the nicest museums that we visited. The unusual thing about the museum was that it welcomed the sunlight from outside.

There were two exhibits were no picture taken was allowed. The first one was Art For All: British Posters For Transport. This exhibit runs from May 27 through August 15, 2010. These posters were fun to look at and see what was being advertised on the British railways.

The second exhibit was Seeing Double: Portraits, Copies, and Exhibitions in the 1820s London.
This exhibit runs from June 24 - September 19, 2010. These are paintings inside of paintings ans some are altered slightly. The artist is John Scarlett Davis.

There are many great paintings to look at as well. The floor plan is an open floor plan, which gives a great view. I recommend visiting the Yale Center for British Art and when I post the pictures, you will see why. Thank you

Hey all,
Never made it to NY, I was sick yesterday the wife was sick today. So to go to a museum I decided to take the kids close by. So we went to The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield. There were a lot of different things to see there. From videos of knitting, to first piece sketches and journals while in the process of painting. The one thing that stood out for all of us were the pieces from Brain Donnelly a.k.a. KAWS. Very big thing in Japan. Anyway this is what I will be writing about.

I have been having a situation with getting to New York,but viewing all the pictures I was amazed at the beautiful craftmanship of each piece.I am going to get there one way or another.Todd,your pictures were beautiful I love different sculptors and you seem to have gotten some wonderful shots of several of them.Looking at the size of the room entrance were also astonhing,it reminded me of the long walk to each area of the building once you enter.I am awaiting my visit soon.

The Met museum was a great experience. When you go, you should get there early, because it is crowded and there is a lot to see. We spent almost seven hours at the Met and missed a few things. Also be prepared to spend some time looking at the Picasso exhibit. Have fun and I hope you enjoy some of these pictures.

My modem went on my home network. first there was a problem in the neighborhood so I did not know until yesterday. It has been out since Thursday so I will be a little slow on getting the blogs out. Hello everyone,I visited Yale art gallery and the British museum this Saturday.I took my granddaughter with me,she seem to enjoy herself and she had to read the information card as I was doing the writing.She also picked out a painting she liked and she took the picture.She was my helper and a good helper she was.It was a nice day for the visit,I enjoyed the Yale museum more so then the British museum.I was able to find the painting that I seen before when I attended Gateway,I noticed something different about the painting,I am wondering if they reprinted the painting if that is possible there were things that I looked for in the painting that I didn't see this time. I will be sharing my pictures as soon as I get some help to put them up,I'm not that advance in computers.

Some Information About the Met

If you have been to the website for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, you may have noticed that admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students... however, that is a recommended amount. You may offer a free will donation of any amount, and it's gratefully accepted. I see students standing in line all the time, with a quarter in their hands, ready to pay admission.

There is a wonderful onsite garage on Fifth Avenue, attached to the museum. It's located on the south side of the museum on the right-hand side on Fifth Avenue. If you choose to drive, take the W. Side Hwy., down to 96th St., head east, and through Central Park. Then make a right on Fifth Avenue, and you are now within a half-mile of the museum. Just pull into the parking garage, and you'll be all set. This makes for a wonderful family outing...

Be sure to check the website before leaving for help in planning your day. I highly recommend that you take a one-hour free tour just to get a sense of some parts of the collection.

Hello To All, I planned on going to New York this weekend to the museum,with a friend.We were packed with lunch and all the goodies on the road.We had just entered New York when my cell phone rings,I had a family emergency in Maryland so we just drove straight there.So I will re-plan this visit as my last museum visit.So far what I have read on the blog its very interesting and I can't wait to actually get to visit.Also I found out there is another museum there not to far that has a display of King Tut Tomb,it's sounds interesting also.

Will post paper later tonight, but here are some pic's from Yale. My wife and I went to this museum, pictures are better. The special exhibit was different, talking graphics, with the pictures of circles and explanations for each one. Then the one of the drug addict shooting up, looks so real. Almost thought someone was laying there for real. Then you have the TV stuff,Telephone and surprise attack, was a surprise. I never thought that some of this kind of art would be in a museum. It is different for sure. Plus of course there was construction going on there as well. Well just an update on some of the art available.

Also the picture above was taken from a place in New Haven, a friend of mine is working there. Will get better details if you want. Anyways a French artist, not sure who, painted this standing next to the orange closeup it seems like nothing. But from afar lke picture shown this is what he painted. Pretty cool when just a blob of random painting, at least standing in front of it, turns into something like that. Just another art info that I am starting to be aware of lately.

Just letting you know that I heard about the Hartford museum on NPR. It seems like they had a roof leak and that is why 1/3 of there art work is not on display. I guess rain and art do not mix. So that is why I did not have that to see. Anyways they wanted to expand into the Times building next door. But I guess the roof is needed more. Just a little info, since we are going there we are helping in a small way.

Hi Mike,I understand about taking pictures.I think you did good for your first time.Your choice of art was different,I liked the style of paintings the scenery painting seem to give a feeling of serenity of peace.The open background giving the view of showing the mountain in a mist,even a light fog.The outside of the museum looks like the courthouse downtown,the details of the archway entrance coming to a crown point was art within itself.

Hi all,

Would have posted earlier, but had to put my 15 year old cat put to sleep. Anyways, it has been a day. Was going to the Hartford museum with the kids, but they decided that the new pool and friends are what they would prefer to do. So had to wait for the wife to come home before I went. So for my first visit I choose Hartford and went on my way. Here are some photos, sorry not the best photographer, she was home with the kids. She takes photos for a living.

Will post the others with my paper on my personal blog. The two above one American and the other European are the ones I was interested in most. But the one thing that I saw that I did not know was the smoothness and colors that stood out from some of the paintings. I am use to going to children's museums. Not very much art there. The paintings were a far cry from what I was expecting. Big blobs of oil paint brushed into a picture. They were actually great. Also the other thing that I saw, were Picasso paintings. I was not expecting to find that type of name in this small museum. Actually not sure what I was going to see. I will never understand why they call that art, but everyone has their own opinions. At least the ones I saw did not look like the other fine art that I seen while there. But I am learning and will understand more as I go along. This was a Museum experience.

I had planned to visit the Yale museum this weekend ,because I was looking at a art display on television last night,and they really was showing some interesting art.By the time I decided to go the weather was so humid so I will be going this week coming.Also the museum on State Street has an interesting art display going on I will attend that will maybe next weekend.They had a beautiful display at Christmas time called "The Nativity of Christmas" it was gorgeous.So be prepared for a great display of art at the gallery.

Hello, my name is Melissa.I am very excited to be part of this class.I have been married for 22 years,and have four adult childern ranging in the ages of 27- 34.I have six grandchildern,one that lives with me.I started out as a parent volunteer for the New Haven Public School for several years,while my childern attended schools.I always had a love for childern.I am now a teacher for the Headstart Program for the New Haven Board of Education,I work at Helene Grant School with childern starting at the age of 2.9 months to 5 years old.I was given the opportunity from my job to continue my education, and earn my BA degree which I graduated this May 16,2010.This was a two year Co-hort under the board of education.My targert to visit the museum will be within the month of June.I really can't give a specific date due to my regular job duties of the paper work due at the end of the school year.I have had the chance to visit the museum in New York as a teenager(some years now) but looking back I didn't really have the full concept,visiting other museums lately as a class assignment I really can appreciate the world of art in a different aspect. Rebloging my intro

Hi all,
Just re-posting info that I put on my personal blog. OOPS! I am new to this so I will do my best to get it right.
Just a little about myself. I am married with two children. Work all week and go to class on Tuesday nights. For the last 3 years or so.
I will be using this experience to take the kids to a different type of museum. We usually go to the childrens museums, so this should be different for them and for me. Hopefully we will learn something together.
I am going to a museum this weekend not sure which one. My wife works most weekends and depending on time schedule, Iwill choose from there. Usually have to have the kids somewhere so that is why the unknown. I will do the three required just not sure when I will get to NY, working on that for future time.

Don't stress too much about writing your papers. I understand that this is probably your first class in academic art... This template will break it down for you and make the process go much easier...

1) Write one paragraph of your impressions of the day... set the scene.... Did you go alone? Who was with you? What were your first impressions upon arriving at the museum? Post 1 or 2 pictures... Write 1 paragraph.

2) Write a brief history of the museum itself. When was it built? Who was the architect? What style is the building? 1 paragraph.

3) Convey your general impression of the whole collection. Can you identify some of its strengths? Were there special exhibitions? 1 paragraph... 1 or 2 photos posted.

4) Choose 1 artist to focus on and specifically, one piece. Concentrate on this for the next 3 paragraphs. This artist and work should appeal to you personally.

-Begin with a description of the piece and artist's name. What medium (oil on canvas, marble, etc..) What size is it? When was it executed? (1 or 2 photos)

-Write a brief biography of the artist...
-What movement does the work fit into? (Impressionism, Surrealism,, etc... or period, Rococo, Baroque...) -What artist of work came before this piece that might have influenced the artist's vision? Name the movement.
-What work or movement followed?

Post detail shots (close up) of the work as well that support your impressions.

-Wrap up paragraph.... Total length about 750 words... can go higher...

That's it... break it down like this and the paper should go smoothly

As a reminder, if you use any words written by someone else, set them off by italicizing them (highlight them and hit the "I" button in the editor). Cite where the source came from. You can copy the url and paste it under the quote if it came from an online source.

Hi Everyone,

This is the launch week. My expectations for this week will be that you will post a short hello and bio to this class blog and that you will set up your own blog and also post the link to it in your post here.

On your blog, I would like you to post a tentative itinerary of the museums you plan to visit and the dates you will visit. Allow yourself a minimum of 3 hrs at any one museum and some, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the whole day. Get on the internet and check out the shows and hours each institution has posted.

If you create your blog and post to this blog, I will record two "present" attendance records for the week. Did you know that the college has a strict new attendance policy? If you fail to show up during the first 2 weeks of class, they will automatically withdraw you from class. To get back in, you need my permission and have to pay a $250 reinstatement fee.

I will post a template you can use in writing your papers. It will help demystify the whole process...

To get things started, let me tell you a bit about myself.... I have been teaching full time at Albertus Magnus College for the past 30 years and am grateful for the opportunity to spend my life working with students who want to learn more about art. I've been married for the past 35 years, and have 2 wonderful sons, 27 and 30. My older son is married and has an almost 3 year old son and a 1 yr old son. That's Kieran and me at thome in Redding.

My main interest is photography and I earned an M.F.A. in still photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. At Albertus I teach not only Photography but a range of other courses which include Digital Photography both online and face to face, Foundation Design (2-D and 3-D), Graphic Design, Ceramics, Intro to Computer Art, 20th Century Art History and The Museum Experience.
